Stay Safe This Halloween with These Tips From SDPD
With plenty of activities scheduled in San Diego this Halloween weekend, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) wants to remind you to stay safe, be vigilant, and remember that Sunday coincides with the time change for daylight saving time. So, here are a few tips to enjoy yourself responsibly tonight and in the next few days:
- Stay visible – Include reflective components on costumes or carry flashlights or glowsticks to increase visibility.
- Use pedestrian crosswalks and walk in groups – Always use crosswalks and wait for traffic to stop before crossing the street.
- Examine treats before eating – Inspect treats for signs of tampering. You should discard any unwrapped or suspicious-looking candy.
- Stay in well-lit, familiar areas – Stick to well-lit streets and avoid houses that aren’t lit up, as they may not be participating in Halloween. Again, walk on sidewalks and avoid walking in the street.
- Slow down and pay attention – Given recent tragic traffic incidents, remember to slow down, particularly in high-traffic areas or neighborhoods where kids are likely to be walking. You should be extra cautious and watch for pedestrians crossing the street. Please allow space for emergency or public safety personnel who may be on the roadway responding to calls for service.
- Keep your home safe – You should lock doors and windows, and secure valuables inside, especially if you are handing out candy or hosting gatherings. Don't leave valuables visible or within reach from the outside.
- Enjoy responsibly – If you are out and enjoying nightlife in San Diego, please do so responsibly. Don’t accept drinks from strangers, monitor your drink at all times and use ride-sharing services. Do not drive under the influence.
- Report suspicious activity - Call SDPD if you see something suspicious. For emergencies, dial 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, dial 619-531-2000.
