San Diego Public Library (SDPL) has unveiled a book collection designed to help young learners develop reading skills more efficiently. The new “Decode with Odi” section offers a dedicated space for decodable books – books designed to help children “decode” phonic sounds created by various letter combinations.  

Unlike traditional books for early readers, decodable books use carefully controlled vocabulary that allows children to practice specific letter-sound relationships and phonic patterns. Research shows this structured approach supports reading success by helping children decode words independently, strengthening both their confidence and foundational literacy skills. 

“The San Diego Public Library wants every child to have the opportunity to develop their reading skills, the chance to make new discoveries through books and the inspiration to see themselves as confident, capable readers,” said Library Director Misty Jones. 

With decodable books organized by skill level, the new collection is designed to make it easy for families, educators and caregivers to find the books that match a child's stage of development. Materials were curated from a variety of publishers to provide a range of stories while supporting evidence-based reading instruction. 

The name "Decode with Odi" reflects SDPL’s goal of making learning to read a fun, welcoming and approachable activity. Odi the Coyote, SDPL’s mascot — whose name stands for “Opportunity, Discovery and Inspiration” — encourages young readers to explore new books, celebrate their progress and discover the joy of reading one sound, one word and one story at a time. 

Grant funding for the collection came from the San Diego Foundation and the Dr. Seuss Foundation, whose support has allowed SDPL to expand access to high-quality early literacy resources for San Diego families.  

The launch of “Decode with Odi” is part of the San Diego Public Library's broader commitment to early literacy and school readiness. In addition to the new collection, SDPL offers free storytimes, kindergarten readiness workshops, the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, homework help, online learning resources and educational programming that supports children and families from birth through high school and beyond. 

By bringing high-quality decodable books together in one dedicated location, SDPL hopes to make it easier for every child to access the tools they need to become confident, successful readers.
