The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) has been awarded a $428,000 grant from the California Highway Patrol through the state’s Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program. This funding, made possible by cannabis tax revenues, will support SDPD’s efforts to reduce impaired driving and enhance roadway safety through a comprehensive strategy of enforcement, education, and training. The grant performance period runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

The grant will fund the following key initiatives:

  • DUI Saturation Patrols – Increased high-visibility enforcement targeting impaired drivers across San Diego.
  • Public Education and Outreach – Community engagement and awareness campaigns to inform the public about the dangers of driving under the influence of cannabis or other substances.
  • Impaired Driving Detection Equipment – Acquisition of specialized tools and resources to support officers in the identification and assessment of drug-impaired drivers.

“This grant allows us to take a well-rounded approach to traffic safety,” said SDPD Sgt. Gregory Minter. “By combining focused enforcement with officer training and community education, we can better protect our roadways and reduce the threat posed by impaired drivers.”

This award is part of a broader $35 million investment announced by Governor Gavin Newsom to support nearly 150 local agencies statewide in their efforts to combat impaired driving. The Cannabis Tax Fund Grant Program is administered by CHP to help law enforcement agencies prevent roadway injuries and deaths related to cannabis and other substance use.
