Road Improvements to Begin on Via de la Valle

Starting on Monday, Sept. 8, at 9 p.m., a portion of Via de la Valle near the Del Mar Fairgrounds will be temporarily closed as the City of San Diego begins asphalt overlay work. Work will occur from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8, and Tuesday, Sept. 9, from just east of San Andres Drive to just east of the intersection of Jimmy Durante Boulevard and Valley Avenue. This segment of work includes improvements to more than 1.8 lane miles.
In coordination with Caltrans, the City will also initiate on-ramp closures from Via de la Valle to northbound and southbound Interstate 5. Both the northbound and southbound on-ramps to I-5 from westbound Via de la Valle will be closed the night of Sept. 8 and the southbound on-ramp to I-5 from eastbound Via de la Valle will be closed the night of Sept. 9. Eastbound and westbound traffic on Via de la Valle will be maintained during working hours, but traffic in each direction will be reduced.
Electronic signage is posted notifying travelers of the closure and associated detours.
This work is part of AC Overlay Group 2303, an effort to resurface various streets across several communities. Work includes removing damaged roadway surfaces, replacing them with fresh asphalt and restriping the lanes. It also includes upgrading vehicular loop detectors and curb ramps to facilitate access for people with disabilities. The project features nearly six lane miles of resurfacing with an investment of $4.8 million.
The project is part of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department's Paving Program, which is based on several factors, including the Transportation Department's Pavement Management Plan, street condition assessments and funding availability.
