Councilmember Vivian Moreno joined community members Monday morning to celebrate improvements made to Coral Gate Neighborhood Park in San Ysidro. These improvements are the first major upgrades to the park since it was originally constructed in the early 2000s.

The $4.94 million project included upgrading play equipment and surfacing, paving the entry plaza, refreshed landscaping and replacing security light fixtures and poles. Additionally, curb ramps and ADA-accessible walkways were installed along with accessible parking stalls and directional signage. Other improved amenities include drinking fountains, pet waste stations, trash and recycling, hot coal receptacles, and relocating and adding bike racks and benches.

“For too long, communities like San Ysidro have been left behind with park sites like Coral Gate being neglected for decades,” said Vivian Moreno, D-8 Councilmember. “The community’s advocacy to ensure Coral Gate Park was renovated was absolutely key to getting this project completed. Our families deserve a safe, modern and accessible park. I am proud to say that Coral Gate Park will now be another park location in District 8 where families can gather and make memories.”

Following years of advocacy by local residents, some who spoke at yesterday’s celebration, the City and its contractors were able to complete the project this month, after beginning renovations in mid-2024. After hearing extensive community feedback, the colors and structures throughout the upgraded play area represent a seaside design theme.

“We are thrilled to celebrate the completion of the improvements and upgrades to Coral Gate Neighborhood Park,” said Elif Cetin, Director of the Engineering and Capital Projects Department. “This project was the result of a successful collaboration between the project team and the community, and we are glad this vision of an improved park for the San Ysidro community has come to life.”

The project was also funded with $1.2 million in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to the City of San Diego. Coral Gate Neighborhood Park is located at 3775 Annella Road in the Coral Gate subdivision of San Ysidro.
