New electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be installed at nine City of San Diego libraries and recreation centers with funding from two major county grants totaling more than $16.5 million.

The City’s partner, EVerged, will use the grant funding to install the new equipment as part of the City’s ongoing Public Electric Vehicle Charging Program, which aims to increase access to EV chargers throughout San Diego, for residents and visitors alike.

In keeping with the grants’ funding terms to prioritize historically under-resourced communities, most of the new EV charging stations will be installed in Council Districts 8 and 4.

“This is an exciting step forward for the City’s EV charging program, which will make driving non-polluting electric vehicles more convenient than ever,” said Heather Werner, Deputy Director of the Energy Division of the City’s General Services Department. “This grant funding will enable us to move toward a cleaner, healthier future for San Diego, at no cost to the City.”

The grants come from the San Diego County Air Pollution Control District’s Clean Air for All Program, and are meant to provide incentives to replace gas and combustion engine vehicles with low-emission alternatives, which will help the region meet state and federal air quality standards.

The Community Air Protection Program grant accounts for $9,612,000 in funding for chargers at five locations, and the Carl Moyer Memorial Air Quality Standards Attainment Program will provide $6,918,000 for an additional four locations. Under the terms of the grants and its contract with the City, EVerged will provide 25% in matching funds for all sites. A total of 67 new charging ports will be installed at these nine sites:

  • Azalea Recreation Center
  • Dolores Magdaleno Memorial Recreation Center
  • Linda Vista Recreation Center
  • Valencia Park/Malcom X Library
  • Robert Egger Sr. South Bay Recreation Center
  • San Ysidro Larsen Field Community Center
  • Skyline Hills Library
  • Skyline Hills Recreation Center
  • Southcrest Recreation Center

Construction to install the new EV charging stations is anticipated to begin in the fall and the equipment is expected to be in place and operational in 2028.

These new charging stations are part of the City’s Public Electric Vehicle Charging Program (PEVCP), which aims to install hundreds of EV chargers in public locations over the next decade.

The City has San Diego has more than 400 City-owned parking lots, with nearly 100 of them located at community recreation centers and libraries. Those lots will be the focus of the first phase of construction. In later phases chargers will be installed in parking lots at City beaches, municipal office buildings, fire and police stations, and parks and open spaces.

The City has entered into an exclusive 10-year concession agreement with a competitively procured vendor, EVerged, to implement the PEVCP. EVerged is responsible for financing, designing, permitting, operating and maintaining EV chargers at City-owned parking lots. To learn more, visit: https://sandiego.everged.com
