Look Twice, Save a Life: Motorcycle Safety Tips from SDPD

With summer around the corner, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) is urging drivers to stay alert and watch out for motorcycles on the road. Warmer weather means more motorcycles are sharing our streets, and increased vigilance can help prevent crashes and save lives.

“Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so be extra careful before changing lanes,” said SDPD Sergeant Gregory Minter. “A simple double-take can make a life-saving difference. Motorcycle riders do not have the same protections as drivers and passengers do. Let's all do our part to keep each other safe out there.”

The reminder comes with sobering statistics. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 6,218 motorcyclists were killed in traffic crashes in 2022, accounting for 15% of all highway fatalities. California saw 634 motorcycle-related fatalities that same year, a 3.8% increase from 2021.

To help reduce the risk of collisions and injuries, SDPD encourages everyone to follow these safety tips:

For Drivers:

  • Always check mirrors and blind spots before changing lanes.

  • Maintain a safe following distance behind motorcycles.

  • Use extra caution if a motorcycle’s turn signal is on—make sure the rider is actually turning before proceeding.

For Motorcyclists:

  • Always wear a U.S. DOT-compliant helmet with eye protection.

  • Dress in leather or other durable gear, including jackets, pants, gloves, and boots with non-skid soles. To enhance visibility, add reflective materials to your clothing and bike.

  • Ride defensively and don’t assume other drivers can see you, especially in blind spots.

  • Keep your headlights on at all times, even during the day.

Whether you're driving or riding, never operate a vehicle while distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Let’s work together to make San Diego’s roads safer for everyone.
