First Round of New Electric Vehicle Chargers Have Been Installed
The installation of the first round of new electric vehicle chargers is now complete. Over the past two weeks, EVerged, the company contracted with the City to create its new EV charging network, has replaced old and non-working EV chargers in a dozen City parking lots, from the San Diego Zoo, to the Central Library, Mission Bay and Rancho Bernardo. In honor of Clean Air Month, charging at these stations will be free through the end of May.
EVerged is providing and maintaining the new EV chargers on City property at no cost to the City. As part of its 10-year contract with the City, EVerged will install the chargers and ensure they remain in good working condition. The City provides the property for the chargers to be installed and collects a portion of the revenue.
“This truly is a win for the City,” said Anna Lowe, Zero Emissions Vehicles Program Manager with the City’s Department of General Services. “EVerged is contractually responsible for financing, permitting, constructing, operating and maintaining the EV chargers for the duration of the contract.”
Now that the old chargers have been replaced, new chargers will be installed at City libraries and recreation centers during the next phase. Over the next five years, chargers will be installed at some 400 City parking lots, including parks, beaches and City-owned office buildings and work locations.
This program aims to encourage the use of electric vehicles, contribute to the City’s Climate Action goals, and make San Diego an even more enjoyable place to live, work and play. Once these installations are complete, San Diego residents will have many more options for charging their EVs, which is especially helpful for those who may not have charging infrastructure at their homes or workplaces. Visitors to San Diego will also be able to enjoy the beautiful parks, beaches and other attractions without worrying about how and where they will be able to charge their EVs.
“Having chargers throughout the city, available to everyone in every community, will help support the interest and desire to not only purchase these vehicles, but also ensure that folks are able to confidently get anywhere in the City in an EV.” Lowe said.
