Don't Toss that Christmas Tree in the Trash, Recycle It!

Christmas Tree Recycling

Not sure what to do with your Christmas tree? Once all of the trimmings and ornaments have been removed, the City of San Diego is asking residents to recycle their live trees at one of 16 locations through Jan. 16, 2026.

On Friday, Dec. 26, the City launched its 52nd Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program, which aims to reduce landfill waste and promote sustainability. Through recycling, trees are given a second life by converting them into high-quality compost, wood chips and mulch products.

Over the last 51 years, the City has recycled 52,421 tons of Christmas trees, which equates to 104.8 million pounds!

“We encourage residents to bring their clean, undecorated Christmas trees to any of our 16 drop-off locations within the City or place them in their green bins for collection,” said Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera, Chair of the City Council's Environment Committee. “Recycling Christmas trees reduces waste sent to the Miramar Landfill and supports the City's sustainability efforts by converting the trees into high-quality mulch and compost that residents can pick up for free at the Miramar Greenery.”

Both green and flocked trees (fake snow) are accepted. All tree stands, bags, netting, lights, ornaments, tinsel and other tree decorations must be removed. No artificial trees accepted. Please do not illegally dump any other items at the drop-off locations.

San Diegans also have the option to place trees in their green bin, after making sure it fits and the lid closes completely. Check out this helpful video for more tips on how to recycle your Christmas tree in your green bin.
