City of San Diego, 3Roots Developers Break Ground on 24-Acre Bruce Brown Memorial Park

Officials breaking ground

City leaders, developers of the 3Roots community, Mira Mesa residents and the family of the late Bruce Brown joined together to break ground on Bruce Brown Memorial Park, a highly anticipated 24-acre public park within the new 3Roots community development.

Bruce Brown Memorial Park represents a major new recreational investment for Mira Mesa and a meaningful example of how public/private partnership can create lasting community benefit. Through the collaboration between the City of San Diego and the 3Roots development team, the park will deliver substantial public infrastructure alongside new housing, open space, walking paths and community-serving amenities, reinforcing the broader vision behind 3Roots as a place where thoughtful planning, private investment and public priorities work together.

"Prior to serving in elected office, I had the pleasure of serving alongside Bruce Brown on the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group, where I was lucky to witness his hard work, passion, and dedication to bettering the Mira Mesa community,” said Councilmember Kent Lee, who represents Council District 6. “And so, with gratitude, we honor Bruce's legacy of service in this very special way. Part of the vision of that legacy is now reflected in this new community park — one that Bruce would have been proud to see come to life."

The park is expected to open in summer 2027 and will help address the continued need for sports fields, active recreation areas and public gathering spaces in one of San Diego’s largest and most established communities. Designed to serve Mira Mesa residents, youth sports organizations, families and community groups, Bruce Brown Memorial Park will become a central public gathering place within 3Roots and the surrounding area.

“This project shows what’s possible when the public and private sectors come together to build new homes while also building new amenities for neighborhoods,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “As San Diego grows, we need to keep building communities where people can live, work, and play. That means creating more homes and investing in nearby parks, recreation spaces, sports fields, trails, and gathering places that bring people together.”

Once open, Bruce Brown Memorial Park will give thousands of kids a place to call “their” sports fields, creating character and lasting memories. The addition of the park represents a 23.5% increase in ballfields in the surrounding area, while increasing recreational space by 11.7% for Mira Mesa.

Bruce Brown Memorial Park honors the late Bruce Brown, a longtime Mira Mesa volunteer whose decades of service helped shape the community’s parks, recreation programs, planning priorities and civic life. Brown served in numerous leadership roles, including with the Mira Mesa Town Council, Mira Mesa Recreation Council and Mira Mesa Community Planning Group, and was widely recognized for his deep commitment to youth sports, parks, clean-up efforts, community planning and volunteer service.

3Roots is a master-planned community by Lennar, Shea Homes and CalWest that blends new residential neighborhoods with parks, walking paths, open space, wellness-oriented amenities and convenient access to major employment centers, shopping, dining and coastal San Diego destinations.
