The City of San Diego provided the County of San Diego with corrected Solid Waste Management Fee data yesterday, and is continuing to work together with the Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office to now update the affected property tax statements. Approximately 87,000 customers were affected by the error.

“When this error was identified, I directed immediate action to correct it. The City’s Environmental Services staff has now provided the County with the accurate billing information, we’re coordinating with the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office to update property tax statements, and City staff will notify affected residents directly,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “This was an unacceptable error, and we are fixing it. Our responsibility is to be upfront when something goes wrong, act quickly to make it right and keep San Diegans informed along the way. No one will be expected to pay more than the correct amount.”

The incorrect amounts were included in billing information transmitted to the County. In some cases, the fee appears as higher than the correct amount and, in some cases, it is lower. No resident will have to pay more than appropriate for their selected service level.

Affected customers do not need to take any action at this time. The City of San Diego will contact affected customers directly with next steps. Customers do not need to contact the City to determine whether they were affected. Customers can view their level of trash and recycling service and see their correct amount now in the City’s Residential Waste Collection Services Portal at WastePortal.sandiego.gov.

No payment is currently due. Property tax bills are due Nov. 1.
