Facing a week-long extreme heat warning, the City of San Diego is extending hours for several libraries and recreation centers where people can go to seek relief from the high temperatures. On Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, all locations will be open until 8 p.m. Specific locations identified below will also be open on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 12 to 8 p.m.

The extreme heat warning has been issued starting today, Oct. 2, through Thursday, Oct. 8.

City Libraries:

City Recreation Centers (all locations below open Sunday):

Service animals will be allowed entry at these locations. Please note that regularly scheduled programs and recreational activities may be taking place.

Extreme heat is responsible for more annual deaths than any other weather-related hazard. During periods of extreme heat, everyone is encouraged to avoid overexertion and stay hydrated. Never leave people or pets in a vehicle. Also, residents are encouraged to check on neighbors at higher risk of heat-related illnesses, including children, pregnant people, older adults, outdoor workers and those with pre-existing health conditions.

City Park Rangers are encouraging people to avoid visiting Open Space trails during periods of extreme heat. It’s best to schedule hikes during the cooler morning or evening hours. Stay on the trails, bring plenty of water and leave pets at home during the heat of the day. In addition to the City’s cooling locations, the County of San Diego has a list of designated Cool Zones available for locations outside San Diego city limits.

For individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness, City-contracted outreach workers continue to distribute water and share locations where people can stay cool. The City’s Safe Sleeping Program offers a shuttle service that provides rides throughout the day.
