City Crews Tackle Channel Maintenance Ahead of Rainy Season

City of San Diego crews with the Stormwater Department have been performing channel maintenance in Southcrest and Mountain View over the last several weeks. It’s part of the yearlong effort to maintain stormwater infrastructure throughout the City and keep water runoff flowing properly.

With the help of heavy machinery, City workers have been able to clear tons of trash, invasive plants and other debris from channels along Chollas Creek. Laborers from Urban Corps use hand tools and also play a crucial role in making sure the City’s storm channels are properly maintained.

“Channel maintenance is critical in our efforts to help prevent flooding,” said Stormwater Department Director, Todd Snyder, “We know there are communities that are more vulnerable to flooding, and we intend to focus on protecting those areas.”

The Stormwater Department expects to be able to keep up with maintenance on the 18 miles of storm channels that were addressed following the January 2024 floods. This includes 12 miles of channels within the heavily impacted Chollas Creek Watershed.

Infrastructure maintenance is a critical investment in public safety. Residents who see illegal dumping in channels and storm drains are urged to report it on the City’s Get It Done app, by calling 619-235-1000 or emailing swppp@sandiego.gov
