The City of San Diego has corrected the billing data error that caused inaccurate trash and recycling service fees to appear on approximately 87,000 property tax statements and has provided the corrected information to the County of San Diego.

Beginning tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 26, property owners whose bills were affected will be able to see their corrected amounts on the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website.

Of the approximate 87,000 affected accounts, approximately 44,000 showed an amount higher than the correct fee, while the remaining affected accounts showed an amount lower than the correct fee.

If the property tax statement shows an amount higher than the correct fee:
Property owners will receive a corrected property tax statement from the County. The corrected amount will also be reflected on the County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s website. Property owners are encouraged to use the online information when making a payment.

If the property tax statement shows an amount lower than the correct fee:
Property owners may pay the amount currently shown on their property tax statement. The City will provide follow-up communication with information about how to pay the difference. No property owner will be required to pay more than the correct fee for their selected trash and recycling service level.

The error occurred during the transmission of property information from the City to the County. The affected accounts were distributed throughout San Diego and were not concentrated in any particular community or trash and recycling service level.

The County is currently printing property tax statements, which will begin mailing to property owners in October. No payment is currently due. The first installment of the property tax bill is not due until Nov. 1.

Property owners can verify their trash and recycling service level and see their correct fee now in the City’s Residential Waste Collection Services Portal at WastePortal.sandiego.gov.
